TSSHC-2H RADIANT HEAT THERMOSTAT

The SSHC Radiant Heat Thermostat is sold as an accessory for SSHC's Enerjoy ceiling radiant heating panels. But this simple control device, which operates differently than ordinary thermostats, would actually work well with any type of line-voltage electric heating system.

The difference between this and conventional thermostats is that the SSHC device senses "operative temperature" —a special measurement that takes into account radiant heat exchange as well as conductive heat exchange— rather than just air temperature. The advantage is that in a room with very warm or cold surfaces, such as radiant heating panels or large windows, the operative temperature indicates occupant thermal comfort better than air temperature.

The Radiant Heat Thermostat, which is manufactured for SSHC by Solid State Heating has a gray fluid-filled control knob that is exposed to the room environment (see Figure 1). The knob exchanges radiant heat with the room environment and also reacts to room air temperature. As the knob changes temperature, the internal fluid changes volume and activates a control switch.

Figure 1 - The sensor in this radiant thermostat senses warm or cool surfaces in the room as well as air temperature.

Cold-window sensor A room with 70°F air temperature may feel cool during winter if one wall has a very large picture window. The coolness sensation is caused by radiant heat loss from occupants" bodies to the cool glass surface. A conventional thermostat, which senses only air temperature, would not respond to the radiant heat loss. The SSHC Radiant Heat Thermostat does.

Larry Berglund is a research scientist at the John B. Pierce Foundation in New Haven Connecticut. Berglund tested the SSHC thermostat in an environmental chamber with a simulated cold window surface. He used the radiant heat thermostat to control Enerjoy panels on the ceiling while the temperature of the simulated window was decreased from 70°F to 45°F.

The results showed that the SSHC thermostat worked well and maintained the operative temperature at about 73°F. Without the radiant heat panels, the operative temperature dropped to 65°F (see Figure 2). Berglund told EDU that although there are more elaborate radiant thermostats that might work even better, the SSHC radiant thermostat is considerably better than conventional thermostats for controlling radiant heating systems.

TSSHC-3D - Digital Line Voltage - Digital control

TSSHC-3D

General Information:

The TSSHC-3D is designed to operate ENERJOY PEOPLEHEATERS®.  It is also designed to meet the "Disconnect Means" criteria specified in the 1993 National Electric Code Article 424-19 ("Disconnect Means for Fixed Electrical Space Heating Equipment"). When property installed this thermostat breaks all non-neutral load conductors when switched to the "Off' position. While in this "Off" position it is safe to perform act replacement or service work on the heater load. However, if replacement or service work is to be performed on the thermostat, the power source to the thermostat must first be disconnected.

A precision thermistor is employed to sense temperature. The thermistor resistance is read by a microprocessor to determine if there is a need for heat. If heat is required, the microprocessor turns on a relay within the thermostat. This relay switches power to the connected load. Once the need for heat is satisfied, the thermistor senses the change in temperature and causes the microprocessor to turn the relay off.

The microprocessor will keep the relay off for at least three minutes before allowing a temperature change to turn the relay on again. As a result of using this method of temperature control, the thermostat can provide greater comfort and energy savings. This control does not require batteries to operate. The thermostat has a set point of 55°F* when the thermostat is initially turned on. The set point is easily changed to suit the needs of the user.

*See spec sheet for other default set points.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Temperature Range: 40°F to 90°F (5°C to 32°C)

  • Temperature Default: 55°F (12.7°C) or 68°F (20°C)

  • Display Format: Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

  • Sampling Rate: Every 15 seconds

  • Accuracy: ±1.5°F

  • Power Source: 220VAC - 240VAC, 50 - 60Hz

Installation:

This line voltage device should be installed and serviced by a qualified electrician.

The thermostat has been designed to mount to a standard 2" X 4" electrical outlet box. Leveling of the thermostat is not required. Mounting screws are provided. Mount the thermostat about five feet above the floor in an area with good air circulation. Avoid mounting the thermostat where it will be affected by drafts, air from ducts, and radiant heat sources such as appliances or the sun.

User Note: The top of this unit will become warm to the touch. This is a normal operation. Internal heating is employed to continuously convect air through the thermostat, thereby improving room air temperature measurement.

INSTRUCTIONS

The thermostat is an electronic on/off thermostat for control of temperature by means of an NTC sensor either placed externally or internally in the thermostat. The thermostat has integrated a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI, Class A). The thermostat and the GFCI is a dual model suitable for 120/240 V 50/60 Hz supply.  The thermostat is for flush mounting in a wall socket.

Mounting of floor sensor (fig. 3)

The floor sensor is used for temperature regulation in floor surfaces. For easy replacement the sensor can be mounted in a tube which is placed between 2 heating cables.  The tube is ended towards the floor surface and sealed.  If required, the sensor cable can be extended up to about 100 m with a standard installation cable. 2 leads in a multi lead cable, which is used as supply cable for the heating cable, must not be used.
